# Can you add your passport or ID to Apple Wallet? Country by country

Only in a few places. As of October 2026, Apple Wallet accepts IDs from 14 US states and Puerto Rico, a Digital ID made from a US passport, and Japan's My Number Card; passports, ID cards and driver's licenses from the UK, Canada, Australia, India, the EU and everywhere else cannot be added as an ID.

Dokus keeps your passport, ID card and driver's license from any country safe and at hand on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and it works offline. [Free on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dokus-private-id-wallet/id6781915709)

Since Apple added IDs to Wallet, the same question comes from every country: can I put my passport or driver's license on my iPhone too? For most people outside the United States the answer is still no, and Apple's "Add ID" button simply never shows up. Here is where the feature works, where it does not, and what you can do in the meantime.

## Where Apple Wallet accepts an ID today

Apple's own availability list, checked on October 2, 2026, names three kinds of ID.

- **Driver's licenses and state IDs from 14 US states:** Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio and West Virginia, plus **Puerto Rico**. Every other state is still missing, including Texas, Florida and New York.
- **A Digital ID made from a US passport.** Launched in November 2025, it is accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights and at some businesses. Apple is explicit that it is not a passport: it cannot be used for international travel or to cross a border. You need an iPhone 11 or later, the device region set to the United States, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and an unexpired US passport.
- **Japan's My Number Card**, the one ID outside the United States, available since June 2025 on an iPhone XS or later. It is the national ID card, not a driver's license.

That is the whole list. If your ID is not on it, there is no setting, app or trick that adds it to Wallet as an ID.

## Country by country

### United Kingdom

No UK passport or driving licence can go into Apple Wallet. The government is building its own: GOV.UK Wallet, inside the GOV.UK One Login app. For now it holds the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card, and the government says the driving licence will follow "in future", without a date. It is a separate app, not part of Apple Wallet.

### Canada

No Canadian passport, provincial driver's licence or health card can be added to Apple Wallet as an ID. Apple's documentation lists US IDs only.

### Australia

No Australian passport can be added, and no driver's licence either. State licences that exist in digital form live in each state's own government app, not in Apple Wallet.

### India

Apple Wallet does not accept an Indian passport, Aadhaar or driving licence. India's official route is DigiLocker and mParivahan: the transport ministry has told traffic authorities to accept a driving licence and registration certificate shown in either app as valid.

### The European Union

No EU passport or national ID card can be added. Every member state has to offer citizens a European Digital Identity Wallet by the end of 2026, and those wallets are government apps of their own. Apple Wallet is not one of them.

### Everywhere else

Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, Pakistan, South Africa and the rest: not as of October 2026. If that changes for your country, Apple adds it to the same availability list, which is the page to check.

## Why the "Add ID" option is not showing

If you live in a supported place and still see no option, check the basics: the iPhone model (an iPhone 11 or later for the Digital ID, an iPhone XS or later for the My Number Card), the latest iOS, the device region, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and, for a state ID, that your state is on Apple's list. Outside those places, the option is missing by design.

## What to do instead

Until your country arrives, two things cover most of what people want from an ID in Wallet.

- **Use your government's own app where one exists.** It is the only digital version that officials have to accept.
- **Keep a protected copy on your phone.** It is what saves you when the original is lost or stolen abroad, when a form asks for a passport number, when a hotel or a landlord needs a copy, or when you are somewhere with no signal.

What matters is where that copy lives. In the camera roll it surfaces in search and in Memories unless you hide it or lock Photos with Face ID, and even then it is a loose picture that syncs and shares like any other. A document app should encrypt it on the device, open it only with Face ID, work offline, and let you share a marked copy instead of the original.

## Where Dokus fits

Dokus is a document wallet for iPhone, iPad and Mac, for every document Apple Wallet does not take. It keeps your passport, ID card and driver's license from any country encrypted on your device, behind Face ID, with no account and without ever sending them to a Dokus server. Everything opens offline, iCloud sync through your own Apple Account is free and optional, and a copy you share can carry a watermark naming who it is for. It does not pretend to be an official ID; it is the safe place for the copies you carry anyway.

## Common questions

### Can I add my UK passport to Apple Wallet?

No. As of October 2026, Apple Wallet accepts only US state IDs, a Digital ID made from a US passport, and Japan's My Number Card. The UK government is building GOV.UK Wallet as its own app, and it does not yet hold a passport or a driving licence.

### Can I add my Canadian or Australian passport to Apple Wallet?

No. Neither country is on Apple's list of supported IDs, so the option to add one does not appear. Keep the passport itself for travel, and if you want a copy on your phone, store it in an app that encrypts it and locks it behind Face ID.

### Can I use the Apple Wallet Digital ID for international travel?

No. Apple states that the Digital ID made from a US passport is not a passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. It works at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights and at some businesses, so you still need the physical passport to leave the country.

### Which states support driver's licenses in Apple Wallet?

As of October 2026: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio and West Virginia, plus Puerto Rico. Apple adds new states to its feature availability page as they launch.

### Is it safe to keep a copy of my passport on my phone?

Yes, if it is in the right place. A photo in the camera roll appears in search and in Memories unless you hide it or lock the Photos app, and either way it syncs and shares like any picture. An app that encrypts documents on the device, opens only with Face ID, works offline and never sends them to its developer keeps the copy useful without exposing it.
