# The best document wallet apps for iPhone, compared

Our pick for keeping ID and passport copies on an iPhone is Dokus, which we make. It needs no account, syncs through your own iCloud, does not track you across apps, and is the only app compared here that states both watermarks and hidden areas for the copies you send.

We make Dokus, so weigh our pick with that in mind. A document wallet app here means an iPhone app that keeps copies of your IDs and papers, not a paper travel folder. We read each app's App Store page and site on November 4, 2026. App Store labels are declared by developers and not verified by Apple, and security claims are the vendors' own.

## How the apps compare

These five questions decide what happens to a copy of your passport: who holds it, and what the person you send it to receives.

| App | No account | Sync in your own iCloud | Watermark on copies | Hide areas on copies | No cross-app tracking on its label |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Dokus** | **Yes** | **Yes** | **Yes** | **Yes** | **Yes** |
| Tijori | Yes | Yes | Not stated | Not stated | Yes |
| ID Vault | Yes | Yes | Not stated | Not stated | Yes |
| IDPouch | Yes | Not stated | Yes | Not stated | Yes |
| Proof Pocket | Yes | Backup file, no live sync | Not stated | Not stated | Yes |
| digiID | Yes | No sync stated | Not stated | In a separate app | Yes |
| Swally | Optional | No, Google Firebase | Not stated | Not stated | No |
| Folio | Needed for backup | No, Folio's servers | Not stated | Not stated | No |
| Ente Locker | No | No, Ente's cloud | Not stated | Not stated | Yes |

"Not stated" means it is not on the pages we opened, not that the app lacks it.

Dokus keeps your IDs and passports on your iPhone, locked with Face ID, and sends protected copies when someone asks. 4.8 out of 5 stars [Free on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dokus-private-id-wallet/id6781915709)

## Dokus

Dokus scans documents or imports them from Photos and Files, sorts them into folders and opens them offline. There is no Dokus account. Documents are stored and encrypted on the device, behind Face ID or Touch ID, with screenshot protection, and we never see your documents. Sync through your own iCloud is optional.

Sharing is where it pulls ahead. You can [add a watermark or hide areas before sending an ID](https://dokus.app/is-it-safe-to-send-a-picture-of-your-id/), compress a file, convert between PDF and JPG, and remove a PDF's password, all in the app that holds the document. A copy that names who it is for is worth less to anyone who leaks it.

Dokus needs iOS 26 and runs on Apple devices. The free version holds a limited number of documents, sharing is free to try, and free shared copies carry a small Dokus banner below the document. [Dokus Plus](/plans/) removes the limit and adds expiry reminders, unlimited sharing and copies without the banner.

## Folio

[Folio](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/folio-digital-wallet-app/id1266382717) is free and holds passports, IDs, licenses, cards and tickets, with expiry reminders and shared folders. Backup and restore need an account, and [its security page](https://folio.id/en/security/) describes encrypted data on Folio's servers with a Recovery Code as the only way to restore. Its App Store label lists identifiers used to track you and user content linked to you. Its pages state no watermark or hidden areas.

## Swally

[Swally](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/swally/id1578711166) is a life organizer: documents sit beside finances, a home inventory, warranties, loyalty cards and notes. The free version shows ads, and the label lists usage data used to track you. [Its privacy page](https://swally.site/privacy/) says backup, sync and family spaces put your content on Google Firebase. The listing states no watermark or hidden areas.

## ID Vault

[ID Vault](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id-vault-travel-document-safe/id6744865269) centers on document details: it scans a machine-readable zone, reads NFC chips and copies one field at a time, and [its site](https://idvault.app/) describes giving fields to Siri or an AI assistant. Camera scanning needs a supported machine-readable zone, so it is for documents that carry one, and shared details fall under the receiving assistant's privacy policy. It states no way to protect a copy you send.

## Ente Locker

[Ente Locker](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ente-locker/id6747611956) is a cloud vault for IDs, financial records and credentials, described on its listing as end-to-end encrypted and open source. [Its help page](https://ente.io/help/locker) describes sharing and handing access to trusted contacts. It needs an Ente account, your documents sit with Ente rather than in your own iCloud, and its pages list no expiry reminders, watermark or hidden areas.

## IDPouch

[IDPouch](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/idpouch-id-scanner-storage/id6753971155) scans IDs and passports, adds watermarks and makes standard-size copies, and its listing says documents stay on the device. It states local backup but no sync, and no way to hide areas. OCR, batch scanning and tiled watermarks are premium. It was called CardScan until recently, and its [privacy policy](https://mark-pen.github.io/idscan-privacy/privacy_cardscan_en.html) still uses that name.

## Tijori

[Tijori](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tijori-document-wallet/id6799038870) organizes folders per person, syncs through your own iCloud and reads document fields on the device. It can send a one-time folder link, and its Plus version exports password-protected PDFs. It first appeared in October 2026, [its site](https://tijori.net/) warns that if the key is lost too "nobody can open them", and it states no watermark or hidden areas.

## Proof Pocket

[Proof Pocket](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/proof-pocket-document-vault/id6753912757) needs no account and organizes cases per family member. [Its site](https://proofpocket.com/) describes a backup file rather than live sync, a forgotten master password cannot be recovered, and sharing means exporting a password-protected file (Pro) that the other person opens in Proof Pocket.

## digiID

[digiID](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/digiid-document-wallet/id704063907) is a paid download that shares text fields you review, and those copies cannot be revoked. No sync is stated, the app is excluded from automatic device backup, and a lost key cannot be recovered. Masking sits in a separate app, [digiID limited](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/digiid-limited/id1094176394), whose label lists a device ID linked to you.

## Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet does a different job. It [accepts IDs](https://learn.wallet.apple/id) from select US states, Puerto Rico, the US passport Digital ID and Japan's My Number Card; [Apple's availability page](https://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/) has the current list. [Apple documents passes](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/create-passes-el8l5r9jnhyv/ios) created from barcodes, QR codes and templates, and its pages describe no route for a passport scan or a PDF. For those copies you need a document wallet app. See [the guide to IDs in Apple Wallet](https://dokus.app/add-passport-id-to-apple-wallet/).

## Regional apps

In Germany, [Cards+](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cards-plus-digital-wallet/id6746193984) keeps photos and PDFs locally, and [its site](https://cardsplus.app/) says it uses no cloud; reminders and backups are in Pro, and it states no watermark. In Spain, [DNI Wallet](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dni-wallet/id1645500619) reads the DNI from its chip and holds only Spanish cards, on a listing last updated on December 27, 2024.

## Apps we left out

We skipped apps with no update in more than a year: My Cards (last update October 2020), Card-Safe (October 2022), ID Cards Wallet (May 2023), DigWallet (September 2023) and Pocket Docs (August 2024). We also skipped apps built to turn a card into an Apple Wallet pass, which is a different job.

## How to pick

1. [Scan one document on your iPhone](https://dokus.app/scan-id-on-iphone/) or import it, then check that the small print reads.
2. Turn on airplane mode and open it.
3. Find out where the backup lives and what recovers it if you lose your phone or your password. [The storage guide](https://dokus.app/safe-document-storage/) covers what to ask.
4. Send yourself a copy and look at what arrives: does it say who it is for?

## Common questions

### What is the best document wallet app for iPhone?

Our pick is Dokus, which we make. It needs no account, syncs through your own iCloud, does not track you across apps, and is the only app we compared that states both watermarks and hidden areas for the copies you send.

### Is Dokus free?

Dokus is free to download and holds a limited number of documents, with sharing free to try. Dokus Plus removes the limit by month, by year or as one lifetime purchase.

### Can Apple Wallet hold a passport scan?

Apple documents passes created from barcodes, QR codes and templates, and its pages describe no route for a passport scan or a PDF. A US passport can become a Digital ID where supported, which is a different thing from keeping a scan.

### Will someone accept a copy from a document wallet app?

Whoever asks decides whether a copy is enough. Ask them before you travel or apply.
