# How to watermark photos on iPhone without downloading an app

Open the picture in Photos, tap Edit, then Markup. Use the Add (+) button to add text, position your watermark and tap Done to save. For repeated use, create a shortcut with Overlay Text; for a passport or driver’s license, mark the copy with its recipient, purpose and date.

Dokus watermarks the copy you share with its recipient and date, while keeping the saved original intact. [Free on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dokus-private-id-wallet/id6781915709)

Your iPhone can watermark photos with tools it already has. Photos works for a single picture; Shortcuts saves time when you add the same name or logo to product photos again and again. An identity document needs a different approach from a photo you post online.

## Add text in Photos with Markup

1. Open the picture in Photos and tap Edit.
2. Tap Markup, the pen icon.
3. Tap Add (+), then Add Text.
4. Replace the placeholder with your watermark. Adjust the font, size and color so it is readable against the picture.
5. Drag it into position, tap Done and finish saving the edit.

Photos keeps the original so you can use Revert to Original later. If you want both versions in your library, use More > Duplicate before editing and watermark the duplicate.

## Reuse the same watermark with Shortcuts

For a regular signature or shop name, save the steps once in the Shortcuts app:

1. Tap + to create a shortcut.
2. Add Select Photos.
3. Add Overlay Text, enter your watermark and set its position and size in the action’s options.
4. Finish with Save to Photo Album.

Run the shortcut, choose a picture and save the watermarked result. The input picture stays unchanged. For a logo, use Overlay Image instead and supply your logo file. A shortcut that selects several pictures also needs to apply the overlay to each one, rather than treating the whole selection as a single image.

## A passport or license needs a purpose, not a signature

A name in a corner is easy to crop away. On a copy of a US driver’s license, a state ID or a passport, put the recipient, intended use and date across the document while leaving the required details legible. For example: “For the rental agency only, rental application, October 9, 2026.” A watermark can discourage reuse; it cannot guarantee that the copy will never be misused.

The free [document watermark tool](/watermark-id-copy/) works in Safari and processes the file in your browser. It does not upload the document to a server. Check the recipient’s requirements first: automated identity checks may reject altered copies.

If a field is unnecessary for the check, ask whether you can hide it. Use an opaque, filled shape rather than a translucent highlighter, or use the [redaction tool](/redact-id/). More precautions are in [Is it safe to send a picture of your ID?](/is-it-safe-to-send-a-picture-of-your-id/).

## With Dokus

Dokus stores your documents on your iPhone and lets you add a watermark when sharing. Enter the recipient and the copy carries a repeated diagonal mark with the recipient and date. Your stored original stays unchanged, ready for a different copy next time.

## Common questions

### Can I watermark photos on iPhone without downloading an app?

Yes. Use Photos, Edit, Markup and Add Text for a single picture. To reuse the same watermark, create a shortcut with Overlay Text in Shortcuts.

### How do I remove a watermark I added with Markup?

Open the edited picture in Photos and use Revert to Original. This restores your library’s picture; it does not change a copy you already sent to someone.

### Which free iPhone app adds watermarks?

Photos and Shortcuts are included with the iPhone. For document copies, the Dokus website’s watermark tool works free in Safari and processes files in the browser.

### How do I save a watermark for repeated use?

Create a shortcut with Select Photos, Overlay Text and Save to Photo Album. Store the wording in Overlay Text so you do not have to type it each time. Use Overlay Image for a logo.

### Can I watermark a PDF on iPhone?

Yes. Open the PDF in Files and use Markup to add text on each page. For a document copy, the Dokus website’s watermark tool also accepts PDFs. Check that the recipient accepts watermarked copies.
