Can you export a digital driver’s license as a PDF on iPhone?
A US mobile driver’s license is a verified credential, not a PDF download. California’s mDL uses CA DMV Wallet or supported wallets to present information to a verifier. If someone needs an uploadable copy, ask whether a scan of your physical license is accepted; continue carrying the physical card.
US driver’s licenses are issued by states. California is a useful example of a mobile driver’s license, or mDL, but another state’s enrollment and acceptance rules can differ.
Use California’s official mobile ID
- Start from the California DMV’s mDL page and select CA DMV Wallet or the supported wallet instructions for your device.
- Complete the identity checks with your physical California license or state ID.
- Present the credential through the supported verification flow when a participating organization accepts it.
The DMV says to keep carrying your physical card. Do not treat a screenshot or a PDF you made yourself as the verified credential.
When an application asks for a PDF
Ask whether it requires a scan, a driving record or an official mobile-ID verification. These are different documents. For an accepted scan, scan the physical license front and back in Files and save the PDF. A driving record comes from the issuing DMV’s separate service.
Share only what is needed
Check the recipient and use its official upload portal. A license copy exposes your name, address, date of birth and document number. If a recipient accepts a watermarked copy, label it for that organization and purpose. Do not alter an official signed document when the original file is required.
Delete loose copies from Downloads and conversations after sending. Protect saved files on iPhone rather than leaving them beside ordinary downloads.
