Can you save a driving licence as a PDF on iPhone?

A scan of your driving licence can become a PDF for a recipient who accepts copies. It is separate from any official digital credential or driving record; use the issuing authority’s service for those and keep the physical card where required.

An official credential and a PDF copy are different

GOV.UK Wallet is a government service, separate from Apple Wallet. Its public page currently offers the digital HM Armed Forces Veteran Card through GOV.UK One Login and describes driving licences as a future addition. Check the live government page before relying on a digital licence. A scan of a photocard is not a DVLA-issued digital credential or an official driving record.

A digital credential is issued and verified through a supported service. A PDF made from the physical card is an image copy. Making it does not grant it official status, and storing it on an iPhone does not change where it is accepted.

When someone asks you to upload a PDF

  1. Ask whether they want a scan, a driving record or an official identity check.
  2. For an accepted scan, capture the physical card front and back in Files or Notes.
  3. If both sides must share one page, use the photo to PDF converter. It defaults to A4 for this region.
  4. Inspect the saved PDF and send it through the recipient’s verified upload service.

Do not substitute a screenshot of an official app for its verification flow. Do not redraw a signed electronic driving record with an image converter when the recipient needs the original file. Request records through the licence issuer’s own service.

Send only the copy the recipient accepts

Right to rent checks apply in England, not throughout the UK. Right to work checks have their own UK-wide process. Follow the GOV.UK route that applies: an online share code, an eligible identity service or an original-document check. A watermarked or redacted scan you email is not a substitute for the required check.

If a watermark is accepted, label a separate copy with its recipient and date. Preserve required details. Remove temporary copies from Downloads and messages when you no longer need them, while retaining a protected original.

Keep reference copies in Dokus

Import the scan or accepted PDF through the share sheet. Dokus keeps the document encrypted with its front and back together and can export a smaller PDF or JPG copy. It is a document wallet, not the issuing authority’s app or a way to certify a driving licence.

Common questions

Can I export an official digital licence as a PDF?

Follow the issuing service’s own options. A PDF you create from a scan is a separate reference copy and does not retain official digital verification.

Can I use a scan instead of carrying the licence?

Do not assume so. Carry the physical card where required and check the issuing authority’s current rules and the verifier’s acceptance.

Can Dokus issue a digital licence?

No. Dokus stores and shares copies. The relevant government authority issues official licences and digital credentials.
