How to turn document photos into scans on iPhone
You can turn an existing document photo into a scan by cropping away the background and correcting the page's angle before saving a copy. On iPhone, Photos provides manual crop and perspective adjustments; a document app such as Dokus can apply a four-corner correction when you import the image.
You already have the picture: a form sent in a message, a receipt in Photos or an ID photographed on a table. Start with that image. Turning it into a usable scan means fixing the page's geometry and checking the detail, rather than just changing the filename to PDF.
Check whether the photo can become a useful scan
Open the highest-quality version available and zoom in before editing. All required edges and text need to be present. A crop can remove the table, and perspective correction can straighten a tilted page, but neither recovers a number hidden by glare or text that was out of focus.
| What is wrong with the picture? | What to try |
|---|---|
| The page is clear, with too much background | Crop to the page edges. |
| The page looks like a trapezoid | Correct the perspective before the final crop. |
| The picture is sideways | Rotate it before checking the text. |
| Glare, a finger or the frame cuts off required details | Ask for another picture, or scan the paper again if available. |
| The image already looks right and only the file format is wrong | Follow photo to PDF on iPhone. |
Crop and straighten the photo without another app
Apple documents crop, rotation and perspective adjustments in Photos. For a single page:
- Open the document picture in Photos and tap Edit.
- Open the crop tools. Rotate the image if the writing is sideways.
- Adjust straightening and the vertical or horizontal perspective until the page edges look square.
- Crop the background away, leaving the entire document visible.
- Save the edit with Done, then zoom in to check the smallest required text.
Keep color where it conveys useful detail, such as stamps or annotations. A dramatic filter can make paper look cleaner while making faint writing harder to read. When the corrected image is ready, use the photo-to-PDF guide if the recipient requires that format.
Import the photo into Dokus for a document crop
Dokus offers a crop step for an imported document image, with correction based on the four page corners. It is useful when you want to fix the picture and keep the result as a named document rather than leave it among everyday photos.
- Open Dokus and add a document. Choose Import photo from gallery, or Import from Files if that is where the image is stored.
- Select the image. In the crop step, check that the detected corners follow the document itself, not a shadow or the table.
- Move the corners where needed. Rotate the image if necessary; use Auto to try the edge detection again, or Use Original to keep it unchanged.
- Tap Next and review the corrected result. Give it a name that will make sense later, then tap Add.
- Open the saved document to check it before sending a copy.
When sharing, choose PDF or JPG to match the request. The stored document remains available for the next time you need it. Dokus protects access with Face ID or Touch ID and opens documents stored on the device offline; sync through your own iCloud is optional.
The free app holds five documents on new installations. Dokus Plus removes that cap. A shared copy on the free plan carries a Dokus banner below its content; Plus lets you turn that banner off.
If the picture is somewhere in your photo library
You can choose a photo directly for import. If you have accumulated many document photos, Dokus also offers Scan my gallery to find possible documents, review the results and choose what to add. Confirm each result rather than assuming every detected image belongs in the wallet.
Photos whose full-resolution originals are only in iCloud may need to download before import. Open the saved documents and confirm they are readable before removing any loose copies from Photos. The gallery search and cleanup are optional; you can keep the original photo.
Other ways to scan a photo you already have
Adobe Scan supports importing existing gallery photos, reviewing the crop and saving a PDF. This is a different operation from opening a camera scanner, which expects paper in front of the lens.
If you still have the paper and the picture is unreadable, make a new scan with the scanner in Files or Notes. Photographing your phone's screen, or printing a poor image and scanning the printout, adds another capture without restoring the missing detail.
Save the right copy for the next request
Check the actual file after export, not only the editor's preview:
- All required text and corners remain visible.
- The page reads upright, and its proportions look natural.
- The PDF or image opens in the app where you plan to submit it.
- Its size meets the upload limit. The compression tool can prepare a smaller copy when needed.
- Its name is recognizable, so you can retrieve it without searching your whole photo library again.
Changing a photo into a scan does not make it an issuer's digital credential or a certified copy. Use the original or the issuer's official service when that is what the recipient requires.
Turn the document photos you need again into a Dokus wallet, starting with a clear image you can check after import.
Common questions
Can I scan a document from an existing photo on iPhone?
Yes. Use the existing image in Photos to crop and adjust its perspective, or import it into a document app that supports cropping gallery images. You do not need to print the image or photograph your screen.
Is converting a photo to PDF the same as scanning it?
No. A PDF can contain the same uncorrected picture, including its background and tilted page. Correct the crop and perspective first if needed, then choose the required output format.
Can a scanner fix a blurry photo or remove glare hiding text?
A crop or perspective correction does not recover text that the source image never captured clearly. If the required details cannot be read, obtain a clearer original or scan the paper again.
Does a PDF made from a photo automatically have searchable text?
No. Putting an image in a PDF does not by itself add recognized text. If searchable or selectable text is required, choose an export option that explicitly adds it and test the resulting file.
Do I have to delete the original from Photos after importing into Dokus?
No. Deleting photos is optional. First open the documents saved in Dokus and confirm that the copies you need are complete and readable.
