How to sign a PDF on iPhone: save and send the file

To sign a PDF on iPhone, use Add Signature in the document’s form-filling or Markup controls, draw with your finger and place the signature on the page. Save the completed PDF and check the receiving organisation’s instructions, because a drawn mark does not create a certificate-based digital signature.

Sign the PDF with the built-in tools

Save the original blank form separately if you may need it again. Work with the PDF itself so you retain the whole document.

  1. Open your PDF. If the iPhone asks, save it in Files first.
  2. Open the form-filling controls, tap Add and choose Add Signature. If you are using Markup, choose the plus button, then Add Signature.
  3. Draw your signature with your finger and confirm with Done. You can select a saved signature or create one through Add or Remove Signature.
  4. Drag it to the signature line. In Markup, resize it using the handles.
  5. Save, reopen and check the completed PDF before using Share to send it.

See Apple’s form and Markup instructions. If your iPhone opens the file in Preview, select Form Filling, then Add to insert a signature. The exact controls depend on your app and iOS version.

Follow the Canadian recipient’s signing instructions

Before adding a mark, check whether the recipient accepts a drawn signature, requires its own signing service or asks you to sign inside a portal. A signature field is not permission to choose any method.

For example, IRCC’s PR card application instructions specify an electronic signature using your full name as it appears on your passport. Follow that process rather than placing a signature image on every uploaded file. The guide to renewing a PR card explains the official application route.

A handwritten mark is not a certificate-based digital signature. Do not edit an original that already carries a verified digital signature. If you receive a signing invitation, complete that workflow and retain the finished file it provides.

Keep the correct attachment

  • Check the signature, printed name and date against the form.
  • Reopen the saved PDF and inspect each required page.
  • Keep the blank form and completed version distinguishable.
  • Check the receiving address or upload page before sharing.

Read the Canadian document-storage guide for reference copies. If a separate ordinary copy needs a smaller file, the PDF compressor can help when the recipient permits that transformation. The compressor exports image-based pages without selectable PDF text or preserved digital signatures. Keep the submitted original intact; copy tools do not sign files.

Questions about signing a PDF on iPhone

Can I sign without downloading an app?

Supported Apple form and Markup tools let you add a drawn signature. The receiving organisation can still require a particular signing service or portal.

Does this create a certified digital signature?

No. A drawn signature does not attach a signing certificate or establish that the recipient will accept it.

Should I sign immigration forms this way?

Only when the current instructions for that specific form permit it. Follow the portal’s electronic-signature process when one is provided.

Do the Dokus browser tools add a signature?

No. Use the appropriate Apple or recipient signing workflow first. Dokus can keep a personal reference copy of the resulting document.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
