Hide details on a passport or licence copy, free

4.6 out of 5 stars14 ratings

Cover a licence number, health number or MRZ line before a copy leaves your device.

Or drop it here. JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF, up to 25 MB.

Your document never leaves your device: everything happens in your browser. It even works offline.

Drag a box over each detail the recipient has agreed it does not need, look for the same detail elsewhere on the card, and download. The box is painted into the exported pixels in your browser, so the copy holds nothing underneath, and your original file is untouched.

Covering a detail

  1. Choose a photo, scan or PDF of the document. Crop and rotate it if it sits crooked.
  2. Blur is already selected. Drag a box over the first field, then another for each field after it.
  3. Remove a box you placed wrongly with the × on its corner, and check the back if you added one.
  4. Download the copy as JPG or PDF, open it and zoom in to confirm every box landed where you meant.

Canadian details worth covering, and where they repeat

  • Driver’s licence number. In Ontario, anyone who provides a driver’s licence number can order that driver’s 3-year record. If the recipient only needs to see who you are, the number is a good candidate.
  • Passport number. It appears on the information page and again in the two machine-readable lines along the bottom, which ICAO’s passport standard also uses for your name and date of birth. A box over the printed number alone leaves it readable in those lines.
  • Health number. Ontario’s health privacy act lets only providers of provincially funded health services require your health card, and limits who may collect or use the number. RAMQ lists a bar code alongside the Health Insurance Number on Quebec cards, so a box over the digits should cover the bar code too.
  • Secure status card. Indigenous Services Canada says new and renewed secure cards have carried a machine-readable zone on the back since February 2019. Check both sides.

What not to hide

A copy missing what the recipient must check will be refused. The Privacy Commissioner says a landlord’s credit check needs, at minimum, your name, address and date of birth, and IRCC describes a passport copy as the pages showing the number, issue and expiry dates, photo, name and place and date of birth. No list of fields is safe to hide everywhere: ask which ones they need and cover the rest.

Why the box cannot be peeled off

Ordinary blur and pixelation leave traces an algorithm can work from. Here the selected area is replaced with a texture taken from the surrounding paper and written into the exported pixels, so the downloaded file has no layer to lift and no original characters beneath it. A PDF from this tool holds an image of each page: selectable text, form fields and digital signatures are not kept.

The protection covers only the boxes you drew, and only the copy; the file you started from still shows everything. Processing happens on your device, removes camera data and uploads nothing. Add the recipient’s name in Watermark, or meet an upload limit with Compress.

Redaction questions

Should I hide my driver’s licence number from a landlord?

Ask first. The Privacy Commissioner says a landlord who only needs to confirm your identity likely does not need a copy, and that a credit check needs your name, address and date of birth. If they agree the number is not needed, cover it, since in Ontario a licence number lets anyone order your 3-year driver record.

Do I need to cover the bar code on my Quebec health card?

If you are hiding the Health Insurance Number, cover the bar code as well, because RAMQ lists the two together on the card. Better still, ask whether a health card is needed at all outside health services.

Can I send IRCC a redacted passport page?

Not unless its instructions allow it. IRCC describes a passport copy as the pages showing the number, issue and expiry dates, photo, name and place and date of birth, and covering those defeats the purpose of the copy.

Can someone remove the boxes from the downloaded file?

No. The covered area is replaced in the pixels themselves, with no separate layer and no original detail underneath. Details outside the boxes, on the other side or in a code can still be read.
