Apple Wallet in Canada: can your passport or driver’s licence go in it?

No. As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s ID in Wallet list names a group of US states, Puerto Rico, Japan’s My Number Card and a Digital ID made from a United States passport, but no Canadian passport, province or territory. British Columbia, for one, issues digital credentials through its own BC Wallet app instead.

What Apple’s list covers, and what it leaves out

Apple’s iOS feature availability page lists where ID in Wallet works. On October 13, 2026 that means US states, Puerto Rico, Japan (My Number Card) and a Digital ID created from a United States passport. No province or territory appears, so there is no Apple process for adding a Canadian passport, an Ontario or Alberta driver’s licence, a PR card or a health card. A photo saved as a pass is still just a picture.

Provinces run their own digital credentials

Licences and health cards are issued by provinces and territories, so an official digital version can only come from them. British Columbia describes BC Wallet as an app for receiving, storing and presenting digital credentials such as permits, certifications and licences, and says that functionality is moving into the BC Services Card app. It is a government app, separate from Apple Wallet. Elsewhere, check your own province’s website before trusting an app that claims to hold an official licence.

Cards that still have to be the real thing

  • Driving. Ontario’s official driver’s handbook says you must carry your licence whenever you drive and produce it when a police officer asks.
  • International travel. The Government of Canada’s travel site calls the passport the only reliable and universally accepted travel identification document.
  • Coming home as a permanent resident. IRCC says you need a valid PR card plus a valid passport or travel document to return on a plane, bus, boat or train. Abroad without a valid card, you apply for a permanent resident travel document.

What a copy on your phone is good for

A protected copy answers practical questions: the passport number a booking form wants, or whether your PR card will still be valid when you fly back. Some recipients ask for one outright: IRCC’s study permit instructions tell you to upload a copy of your passport’s information page. Scan it on iPhone, use the photo to PDF converter for a card’s two sides, and compare the built-in locks before choosing where it lives.

Where Dokus stands

Dokus is a wallet for copies: it encrypts each document on your iPhone, opens with Face ID or Touch ID and works offline. It cannot enrol a licence with a province or prove who you are to a verifier.

Questions Canadians ask about Wallet IDs

Will Apple Wallet take an Ontario or BC driver’s licence?

Not today. Apple’s ID in Wallet section lists no Canadian province or territory as of October 13, 2026. Check Apple’s page for changes rather than an app that promises otherwise.

Is BC Wallet part of Apple Wallet?

No. BC Wallet is a British Columbia government app for digital credentials, and its features are moving into the BC Services Card app. It works separately from Apple Wallet.

Can I show a photo of my PR card when I fly back to Canada?

No. IRCC says you need a valid PR card, with a valid passport or travel document, to return by plane or other commercial vehicle. Travel with the card itself.
