How to turn a document photo into a scan on iPhone

To scan a document from a photo you already have, crop away the background and correct the page's perspective before saving a copy. Photos on iPhone has manual adjustments; Dokus can correct the four page corners during import and keep the result as a named document.

The picture is already on your phone: a form received on WhatsApp, a bill in Photos or an ID photographed on a table. Start with the clearest original image available. Printing it and scanning the printout adds another capture without recovering any missing detail.

Crop and straighten the existing photo

Apple India's photo editing guide documents cropping, straightening and vertical or horizontal perspective adjustments.

  1. Open the picture in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Open the crop tools and rotate the picture if the text is sideways.
  3. Adjust straightening and perspective until the page looks square.
  4. Crop away the background while preserving the complete document.
  5. Save the edit, then zoom in to check the smallest text you need.

A photo with a missing corner, unreadable number or glare over a signature needs a better source. Ask for the original image or capture the paper again if it is available.

Work on the problem the picture actually has

Picture is already clear but the form requires PDFUse the image-to-PDF tool.

Converting to PDF changes the file format. It can leave the same tilted picture inside the PDF. Correct the page first if needed, then choose the output accepted by the recipient.

Keep colour where it helps show a stamp, annotation or other useful detail. A strong black-and-white effect can hide faint writing. Judge the result by readability rather than how white the paper looks.

Import into Dokus for a four-corner document crop

Use Dokus when you want to correct the picture and keep the result with documents you will use again.

  1. Open the add options and choose to import a photo from the gallery or Files.
  2. Select the image. At the crop step, check that the detected corners follow the paper rather than its shadow or the table.
  3. Move any incorrect corners, rotate if needed, and review the corrected result. You can try automatic detection again or keep the original image unchanged.
  4. Continue, give the document a recognisable name and add it to your wallet.
  5. Open the saved document, then share a PDF or JPG to match the request.

For example, name a bill copy `2026-11-03 Laptop repair bill`, using the actual purchase date. Separate family members' identity copies clearly, without putting full identity numbers into filenames unnecessarily.

Dokus protects access with Face ID or Touch ID. Documents stored on the device open offline; synchronisation through your own iCloud is optional. The free app holds five documents on new installations. Dokus Plus removes the cap. Free shared copies carry a Dokus banner below the content; Plus lets you turn it off.

Keep original digital documents too

An edited photograph remains a personal copy. It does not become a certified copy or a document issued by the original authority. If a service supplies a PDF, preserve that file rather than relying only on a screenshot. See DigiLocker issued documents and uploaded scans for that distinction.

Putting an image in a PDF also does not automatically make its text searchable or selectable. If that output is required, choose a workflow that explicitly provides OCR and test the exported file.

Before sending or clearing your gallery

  • Check all required text, page edges and corners.
  • Confirm the page is upright and naturally proportioned.
  • Open the actual exported PDF or JPG.
  • Meet the recipient's format and file-size requirements. After compressing a PDF, check small text again.
  • Give the document a useful name and open it once from its saved location.

Deleting the original photo is optional. Check that the Dokus document is complete before clearing other copies. Keep the document photos you need again in Dokus, starting with a picture you have verified.

Common questions

Can I scan a document from an existing photo on iPhone?

Yes. Crop and adjust the existing picture in Photos, or import it into an app with document corner correction. You do not need to print the image or photograph your screen.

Is changing a photo to PDF the same as making a scan?

No. The PDF may contain the same uncorrected picture. Fix the crop and perspective if needed, then save the required format.

Can a scanner recover blurred or hidden text?

Cropping and perspective correction cannot restore detail that the picture did not capture clearly. Obtain a clearer original or capture the paper again.

Is text in a photo-based PDF automatically searchable?

No. That requires recognised text, usually provided by a separate OCR function. Check the exported file if searchable or selectable text matters.

Must I delete the original after importing into Dokus?

No. Deletion is optional. Open and check the saved document before deciding which other copies to remove.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
