BVI birth certificate: request the civil record

Request a BVI birth certificate from the Civil Registry and Passport Office. Its March 2026 notice introduced new certificate designs and directs applicants to contact or visit the office for the application process; the government booking catalogue lists Request for Civil Certificates.

Prepare the official request

  1. Confirm that you need a birth certificate for an existing civil entry, rather than registering a birth for the first time.
  2. Contact the Civil Registry and Passport Office and identify whose record you need and the purpose.
  3. Ask for the current identity, relationship or authority evidence applicable to your request before attending.
  4. If booking through the government catalogue, choose Request for Civil Certificates rather than Registration of Births.
  5. Follow the office’s payment and issue instructions, retain the receipt and check the certificate when received.

Keep the right evidence

The government announced redesigned birth and death certificates on 26 March 2026. The notice encourages people to obtain the new certificates but does not say every older certificate automatically became invalid. Ask the receiving institution and the Registry what is needed for your actual application.

Keep the issued certificate separate from a phone photograph. If a name or date differs from the expected civil record, request advice about the entry rather than modifying the scan. An edited image cannot correct the Registry’s information or reproduce its security features.

If a recipient accepts a personal working copy, you can prepare an accepted reference scan as a PDF. The result is an image-based PDF. It does not preserve selectable text, interactive fields or an original digital signature. Keep this output separate from any original, certified copy or unchanged official file required for submission.

For another official record, see BVI police certificates. For a status application’s certified evidence, see Belonger Status document preparation.

Questions

Is a new birth registration the same appointment?

No. The government catalogue lists Registration of Births and Request for Civil Certificates as different services.

Did the 2026 notice cancel all older certificates?

The notice introduces new designs and encourages obtaining them. It does not state that every older certificate became invalid.

Can I create a certified certificate from a scan?

No. The Civil Registry issues the official certificate. A converted or printed image remains a personal copy.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
