First Irish passport: organise supporting documents before you post them

For a first Irish adult passport, follow the supporting-document list for your place of birth and residence, then the instructions generated by Passport Online. Complete the required identity verification and distinguish originals, accepted copies and personal scans before posting anything.

Submitting Passport Online is one part of a first application. The supporting documents still need their own preparation. Start by opening the DFA adult documentary requirements and selecting the branch that matches your circumstances.

The example below is for an adult born on the island of Ireland and now resident in Ireland. If you were born abroad, were adopted, or live elsewhere, use the corresponding official branch. Do not borrow another applicant's checklist because their application looked similar.

Separate the tasks before collecting files

TaskWhat to check
Establish the relevant application routeYour place of birth, residence and circumstances
Verify your identityThe form and witness specified for your application
Show your name and addressThe distinct evidence requested in your branch
Send supporting documentsThe cover page and address generated for your application

For the example route, the DFA lists a full civil birth certificate, identity verification form, separate proof of name and address, photographic identification and any applicable civil marriage or partnership certificate. Proof of name and proof of address must be different documents, dated within the specified period.

Match each document to one requirement

Make a short list with a line for each requested item. Beside it, record the document you will use and whether the instruction asks for an original, a certified copy or a photocopy. This is especially useful for photographic identification, where the accepted format depends on which document you provide.

For the example route, the name and address evidence must be dated within 12 months of the application. Government correspondence is listed, with qualifying utility bills or bank statements considered if that is unavailable. Check the full name and address on each page before choosing it.

If you need to obtain the birth certificate, use the Irish birth-certificate guide. A research record, a photo of a certificate and an issued full certificate are different items. Keep a reference scan if useful, but supply the format the Passport Service requests.

Complete the identity verification for this application

The DFA witnessing guidance says first-time adult online applicants print the Identity Verification Form at the end of the process. Applicants resident in Ireland have it signed by a member of An Garda Síochána. Applicants outside Ireland must use the appropriate witness in their country of residence.

Use the newly generated form, read its instructions and check every required section before leaving the witness. Keep the completed version apart from any blank or earlier download. A saved licence or passport photo is not a witnessed identity form.

Assemble and check the envelope

  1. Open the final application instructions and place each required item beside its checklist entry.
  2. Retain readable personal copies before sending originals. Capture the full page and endorsements without modifying the document's contents.
  3. Print the generated Application Cover Page and use its destination instructions. The Passport Online FAQ recommends secure postage and says each envelope must contain documents for one application only.
  4. Record the application reference and postage details separately from the document images. Check that no family member's unrelated paperwork has slipped into the envelope.
  5. Keep track of returned originals individually. The FAQ explains that supporting documents and the new passport are returned separately.

Do not flatten or overwrite an issuer's signed PDF or QR-bearing file when retaining an electronic original. A personal scan is useful for reference; converting or editing it does not make it an accepted substitute for a requested original.

Before posting

  • The official branch matches your circumstances.
  • Each requested item has the required original or copy format.
  • Name and address evidence are separate and current enough.
  • The identity form is complete and appropriately witnessed.
  • The cover page, application reference and postage record are retained.

Questions about Irish passport supporting documents

Can I use one letter for both name and address?

For the first-time adult route described here, the DFA requires one document for proof of name and a different document for proof of address. Check your own application branch before assembling the evidence.

Can I send scans instead of the requested originals?

Follow the stated format for each item. A personal scan does not replace an original, certified copy or other specified format simply because the text is readable.

Does online submission start processing if documents are missing?

The Passport Service says it can process applications requiring supporting documents only after receiving them. Check its current guidance and allow for postage without assuming a guaranteed completion date.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
