Open the scan, choose PDF or JPG and set an available Maximum size within the letting agent’s stated limit. Check the saved identity or income details. The targets up to 5 MB are editing choices, not a national Irish rental rule.

Prepare a copy when a tenancy is being agreed

The Data Protection Commission distinguishes an initial rental enquiry from the stage of entering a tenancy. Its guidance questions collecting photo ID, financial statements and PPSNs from everyone applying to view. Ask why the letting agent needs the attachment at this stage and what evidence is necessary before preparing a copy.

The tasks below are for the eventual tenant's agreed document sharing. A copy does not establish immigration permission, certify an original or make an excessive information request appropriate.

Reduce a tenancy ID or income attachment

  1. Choose a scanned passport, IRP card, payslip or other requested evidence, up to 25 MB. For a card requested on both sides, add the back.
  2. Set Format to PDF or JPG as the letting agent requests. Choose Maximum size: 5 MB, 2 MB or a smaller available target.
  3. Wait for Copy size to update. If the tool cannot meet the target, it shows the smallest result it could make.
  4. Download, reopen and inspect every page before uploading. Check small numbers and expiry dates especially carefully.

The compressor lowers JPEG quality first and reduces resolution only when needed. A smaller file is useful only while the information remains readable.

Use the letting agent’s actual attachment limit

There is no universal Irish tenancy file-size rule here. Available targets run from 100 KB to 5 MB; choose an available step at or below the recipient’s ceiling. Here 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. If the original already fits and is clear, keep it.

One file, up to ten PDF pages

This tool compresses an existing PDF; it does not merge several separate documents. Only the first ten pages are used. For a longer passport scan or evidence pack, prepare the right page range beforehand so you do not accidentally omit required pages.

The downloaded PDF contains an image of each page. Selectable text, interactive fields and digital signatures are not preserved. Keep an original signed PDF or a fillable form outside this workflow.

For photos that first need PDF format, use IRP card and passport to PDF. Compress a watermarked reference copy only after checking that the recipient accepts the mark.

Common questions

Does every Irish letting agent use a 5 MB limit?

No. Use the agency’s actual attachment instructions. The tool’s 5 MB target is an option rather than a national rental requirement.

Can I compress a passport scan on my phone?

Yes. Choose the file in the browser, set the target and download the copy. No account or document upload is needed.

Will a digital signature survive compression?

No. Exported PDF pages are images. Keep the original if its digital signature, selectable text or interactive fields must remain intact.
