IRP renewal in Ireland: organise the documents for your permission
Renew an eligible existing Irish residence permission through ISD’s online renewal portal while you are in Ireland. Prepare the current passport biometric page, recent IRP card and the additional documents for your stamp category; the basic identity pair is not the whole checklist.
Start with ISD’s current renewal instructions. This is renewal of an existing permission, including relevant changes of stamp. First registration has a different route. You must be present in Ireland when applying online.
Build the correct upload checklist
- Check the expiry date and the applicable renewal window. ISD currently permits renewal applications up to 12 weeks before expiry; Stamp 2 students must have started their course.
- Open Required Documents and choose your exact permission category and circumstances.
- Read the Renewals column, not the first-registration column.
- Prepare the current passport biometric page and the most recent IRP card, including both sides where specified.
- Add the required proof of address and category-specific evidence. Employment, study, insurance and permission letters depend on the selected route.
Check each file before submission
ISD accepts readable digital scans or photographs for renewal. That does not mean every field uses the same document list. Create a line for each requirement and open the matching file to verify the holder, date and page coverage.
Keep official electronic originals separate from working copies. Do not obscure required identity details or assume optional watermarks are accepted. If a file must be resized, follow the upload field’s stated limit and inspect the result before sending it; avoid unnecessary conversions.
Submit and retain the acknowledgement
Use the portal linked by ISD, select Registration Renewal, upload the documents and pay any applicable fee. Each family member needs a separate application. Retain the acknowledgement, OREG number and payment receipt, and monitor requests for further information.
The acknowledgement is an application record, not the new IRP card. Travel and employment while renewal is pending have separate official guidance. Consult those sections for your circumstances instead of treating a stored scan as permission.

Questions about IRP renewal
Can I renew online from outside Ireland?
ISD says online renewal applicants must currently be in Ireland. Applications submitted from outside Ireland are not accepted.
Are the passport and IRP scans the entire checklist?
No. Read the renewal requirements for your permission category and supply its additional evidence.
Is the acknowledgement the renewed permit?
No. Keep it as proof of submission and follow ISD’s processing and further-information instructions. It is distinct from the issued IRP card.
