PPS Number application in Ireland: prepare your appointment documents
For a first PPS Number application as a resident in Ireland, start through MyWelfare with a basic MyGovID account and book the required in-person appointment. Use the document list supplied with your application and appointment notification to decide what to bring.
Before starting a first application, check whether you already have a PPS Number. Returning to Ireland does not automatically mean you need another one. Revenue's PPSN guidance lists records where an existing number may appear and directs people who cannot locate it to Intreo or a Social Welfare branch office.
This guide is for an adult resident in Ireland preparing a first application. If you live abroad or are applying for a child, follow the relevant official instructions instead of assuming the same attendance and document arrangements.
Pick the correct first step
| Situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| You may already have a number | Existing official records or the relevant support office |
| You have never been issued a number | The MyWelfare first-application service |
| You have an appointment notification | Its actual list of documents to bring |
| You are only looking for work | Check whether you have a qualifying reason before applying |
The MyWelfare PPS Number page explains the current application and appointment route. Starting a job is one example of a reason to need the number; looking for work alone is not.
Start the application and retain its instructions
MyWelfare specifies a basic MyGovID account for this service. MyGovID distinguishes basic accounts from verified ones: use the account route the service requires rather than assuming you must already have a Public Services Card or a verified account.
Read the application questions carefully and describe why you need the number for your actual situation. A need to start a job and a general intention to find one are different answers. Do not manufacture a reason or reuse another person's supporting letter.
For residents, MyWelfare requires an in-person appointment. You book it during the online process, and the appointment notification includes the document list. Save that notification where you can reopen it, along with the location, date and reference. The appointment is a required step, rather than a guarantee that allocation happens on the day.
Turn the document list into a preparation plan
Use three headings in your own checklist: identity, address and reason for applying. Match the service's requested items to those headings, then note any missing evidence. Your appointment instructions determine the accepted documents; a filename such as “proof of address” does not establish acceptance.
For each item, check the holder's name, relevant dates and whether it shows the details needed. If a name or address differs between documents, resolve the discrepancy with the issuing service or ask the official support route what evidence is needed. Editing a scan is not a correction to an official record.
The REG1 application form shows the kinds of personal details and reason for applying that the Department records. If you are directed to a paper route, use its instructions. Do not assume that printing REG1 replaces the documents or attendance requested through your current MyWelfare application.
Prepare the documents for the appointment
- Reopen the notification and check each requested item against what you have gathered.
- Bring the physical documents or other formats specified. A phone photograph is a personal copy and is not automatically equivalent to presenting an original.
- Keep electronic originals unchanged. Preserve any signature or QR code rather than overwriting the file with a screenshot or compressed derivative.
- Put your reference copies in a clearly named group, separate from unrelated family documents. Keep account passwords out of that group.
- After the appointment, retain any follow-up instructions and respond through the official channel if further evidence is requested.
MyWelfare explains that further checks take place after attendance. Keep the appointment confirmation separate from any later letter allocating the number, so you do not accidentally treat a booking notice as proof that a number has been issued.
Before attending
- You have checked for an existing PPS Number.
- The reason for your first application is accurate.
- The current appointment notification and document list are saved.
- Each requested item belongs to the correct holder and uses the required format.
- Originals, reference copies and later allocation correspondence remain distinct.
Questions about PPS Number application documents
Can I finish the resident application entirely online?
The current MyWelfare service requires residents of Ireland to attend an in-person appointment. It supplies the appointment details and document list during the application process.
Will the number be issued at the appointment?
MyWelfare says the application undergoes further checks after the appointment. If successful, the number is sent by post later. Attendance does not guarantee an immediate allocation.
Does saving documents in Dokus submit the application?
No. Dokus keeps personal copies. Start and manage the official application through MyWelfare and follow the appointment and evidence instructions it supplies.
