Singapore passport renewal: prepare the photo and collection documents

Apply for a Singapore passport through ICA's official service using Singpass and a recent digital colour photograph. After approval, follow the collection notification and take the specified documents; the online application and passport collection are separate stages.

A passport renewal starts with the application, but finishes only when you collect the new travel document. Prepare for both stages before a trip depends on the result. This guide focuses on Singapore citizens renewing a passport, rather than a foreign passport or a re-entry permit.

Prepare the application first

  1. Open ICA's passport application page and check that its renewal circumstances match yours.
  2. Prepare a passport-sized digital colour photograph taken within the last three months.
  3. Use the official e-Service and sign in with Singpass.
  4. Check the entered particulars, submit and keep the acknowledgement.

ICA lists renewal where the passport has expired or expires in nine months or less, and an application where pages are running out. Lost or damaged passports have additional reporting considerations, so do not treat those as an ordinary expiry renewal.

Give the photograph its own check

The photo is an application input, not a scan of the portrait printed in your current passport. Use ICA's photo guidelines and its illustrated examples before uploading.

CheckWhat to look for
Recent imageA new colour portrait within the required period
DimensionsICA recommends 400 × 514 pixels for e-Service uploads
FileA format and size accepted by the current upload field
AppearanceFollow ICA's framing, background and presentation examples

ICA says photographs must not be altered or enhanced, and recommends getting someone to take the picture instead of using a selfie. Resizing to the required dimensions is different from changing facial features. Do not run the portrait through a beauty filter or use a document scan as the upload.

Open the actual file you intend to select. Check that it is the correct person's newest photograph rather than a similarly named image for another application. If the portal rejects it, follow the reason given instead of repeatedly submitting the same file.

Save the application record, then watch for approval

Keep the acknowledgement separate from the current passport copy. Note which email address you used and check it for the outcome. MyICA provides application-status access; a stored screenshot is a record of one moment, not a live status check.

For Singapore citizens living overseas, the application page also describes submission through a Singapore Overseas Mission. Read that branch before arranging a visit. Processing and collection arrangements overseas differ from collecting in Singapore, so confirm them with the selected mission.

Consult ICA for current fees and processing guidance. Avoid booking a collection visit solely from a general processing estimate: use the approval and appointment instructions for your application.

Turn the approval into a collection checklist

ICA's passport collection page asks you to arrange collection within one month of approval. The notification email tells you what to bring. At eligible post-office collections, the page lists the current passport, if any, and your digital or physical IC. At ICA, follow the document list in your notification.

The official digital IC is a credential presented through its supported channel. A photo or scan of the IC in a document wallet is a personal reference copy. If your physical card is missing, follow the Singapore NRIC replacement guide and confirm any collection question with ICA.

For overseas collection, the mission coordinates the handover and specifies its evidence. Do not assume another person's appointment or a local post-office checklist applies.

Before the handover

  • The approval is for the correct passport holder.
  • The collection arrangement and date are confirmed.
  • The required current passport and identification are ready.
  • The notification's additional instructions have been checked.
  • The application acknowledgement is distinguishable from the passport copy.
  • After collection, the new particulars and expiry date will be checked.

Keep the new passport's reference copy in Dokus if useful, and mark the old copy clearly as superseded. Dokus organises personal copies; it does not apply for a passport, provide the official Digital IC or replace the passport needed for travel.

Singapore passport renewal questions

Can I upload a scan of my current passport photo?

Prepare a new digital colour photograph meeting ICA's current requirements. A scan of the portrait printed in the old passport is not the new photograph requested for the application.

Does submitting the application book collection?

No. Wait for approval and follow the separate collection and appointment instructions supplied by ICA or your selected overseas mission.

Can an IC scan in Dokus stand in for the Digital IC?

No. A personal scan and the official Digital IC are different. Use the identification route specified for your collection arrangement.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
